Our history

PLC Transmost* has launched business activities in January 1930, when by order of Peoples’ Commisariat of Communications a Leningrad Design Bureau was established for a Bid project to develop a bridge across Volga river near Saratov.

The first decade of Transmost activities was a period of formation as an entity for investigations and comprehensive design of artificial facilities for railway purposes. Already in 1934, Transmost became the most robust design bureau in Design Center under Peoples’ Commisariat of Communications.

In pre-war period, Transmost designed tens of large and medium-size bridges for second tracks and newly constructed railway lines. According to design projects developed by guest groups and teams only, on Zabaikalsky and Ussuriysky railways including, all large and medium-size bridges were constructed, as well as small-size artificial structures on second railway track and new lines with a total length of about 7,500 kilometers. Major overpasses across Volga, Neva, Pechora, Severnaya Dvina, Volkhov, Svir, Amur, Kama and other rivers were constructed.

During the Great Patriotic War, all activities of our institute were adapted in accordance with objectives of wartime. Studies for design of temporary renovation of railway bridges were launched and later, in post-war period, design activities were launched for major rebuilding of bridges and tunnels. In November 1943, Transmost took the 2nd place by its production indicators (among 22 competitors) from design bureaus of Soyuztransproekt. In total, during war years, 2,756 large and medium-size bridges were restored based on designs of Voenvosttransproekt front line teams including over 60 engineers and technicians of Transmost. For participation in restoration works during wartime period, thirty (30) bureau members were awarded with state orders.

50s are important in the life o our company. Exactly in this period, key directions of activities and organizational structure of the company finally shaped, Already in early 60s the company became one of the largest design companies in the country for design and development of transport facilities.

In 1956 Transmost was approved as a leading design organization of the country in the sphere for typical design of small-size artificial structures in railway transport. Period of 1955-1960 may be characterized by substantial increase of specific ratio for development of typical projects and projects of new equipment prototypes in the total volume of company activities. Transmost contribution in creation of typical structures for mass industrial construction of artificial structures was marked by awarding of our institute with an Order of Labor Red Banner in 1980.

In 1967 – 1975, Transmost developed projects for 21 major bridges for Baikal-Amurskaya railway. Based on projects of our company, railway bridges across Neva river in Saint-Petersburg (Finlyandsky bridge) was constructed for the second railway track, as well as a bridge across Bolda river near Astrakhan, Dnepr river in Dnepropetrovsk and other, in total about 20 large-size bridges for combined railway and motor car traffic, including bridges across Irtish,  Ob, Enisey, Amur, Abakan, Angara, Severnaya Dvina and other rivers. Numerous motor road bridges were constructed, across Enisey, Severnaya Dvina, Volga, Dnepr, Neva, Volkhov, Irtish, Om rivers, as well as metro bridges across Ob in Novosibirsk and Irtish in Omsk.

Following privatization in 1993, the Institute was established as Transmost Open Joint-Stock Company. Under conditions of complete economic independence, the first steps of the company management were aimed to take measures for improvement of technology concerning design and investigation activities.

Lately, the most significant Transmost achievements include projects for reconstruction of railway bridge across Amur river in Khabarovsk, construction of several sections for the 3rd transport beltway in Moscow (about 15.5 running km of artificial structures, two bridges across Moskva river including), 1 section of Beltway around Saint-Petersburg, several transport multilevel junctions in Saint-Petersburg, numerous bridges in Khanti-Mansysk Autonomous District, including one bridge across Irtish river near Khanti-Mansysk, a railway drawbridge across Buzan river near Astrakhan, metro bridge across Oka river near Nizhny Novgorod, combined bridge across Dnepr river in Kyiv, a bridge across Enisey river bypassing Krasnoyarsk and many others.

As of 2005 29 employees of Transmost ware awarded with “Honored Transport Builder” title, 10 employees were awarded with “Honored Builder of Russia” title and 4 employees with “Deserved Builder of Russia” title.

PLC Transmost team in total accounts for over 250 qualified experts and resting on perennial experience and well-shaped traditions, we possess everything required in future to offer competitive projects on the market of design services associated with construction of bridge and tunnel structures of any type.
